Kop hero says utility man struggles against top class opposition.

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has singled defender Emre Can out for criticism following the club’s 1-1 draw in the Capital One Cup semi-final with Chelsea on Tuesday night, by saying that he can’t cut it against top players, the Daily Mail reports.

The youngster primarily features in midfield, though he has been made to fill in at the back in recent weeks, and he played there again against the Blues.

It was his clumsy challenge on Eden Hazard that lead to Chelsea’s goal from the spot, and though Raheem Sterling’s equaliser put Liverpool back in it, it has left the tie in the balance ahead of the second leg.

However, former Reds defender and current Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was not impressed, and laid in to the 21-year-old with relatively little mercy.

“He played really well in the last five or six games bringing the ball out,” he said.

“But against top-class players he’s been found wanting. He got beaten too easily and tried to rectify it and made two mistakes.

“He found it really difficult and looked like a midfielder playing at the back. People say he’s been doing well recently in relation to bringing the ball out, but it was clumsy and a penalty, no doubt about it.”
